The
pending retirement of a large portion of the American workforce
has recently been the subject of much discussion within the public
and private sectors. Organizations recognize the potential for significant
disruptions to operational continuity and are bracing for the impact
that will result from the loss of experienced employees.
While many sectors will be affected, government agencies are especially
vulnerable. Fully a third of the 2300-member California
Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) workforce
will become eligible for retirement over the next five years, and
employees are already working to capture the knowledge critical
to organizational performance before their retiring co-workers walk
out the door.
