Profile: Joyce Southward
For over 15 years, IMI instructor Joyce Southward has embodied this profile. Her enthusiasm and dedication to Mapping have made her a favorite of workshop attendees. Joyce spent her childhood in Downey, CA, a small city located just outside of Los Angeles. She remembers those days fondly. "At the time it was a city of orange groves, as much of southern California used to be. I do remember the summer days when we left the house early in the morning to play with friends and did not return until dinner. No one worried about where we were - hardly imaginable today." When it came time to ship off to college, Joyce left this serene little town to attend the University of California at Los Angeles, where she developed her taste for both politics and teaching. After graduating from UCLA, Joyce got her first job working for the McGovern for President campaign, accompanying the California contingent to the Democratic Convention in Miami. After Richard Nixon's election, she went back to school to get her teaching credential and dedicated herself to public education until good friend (and fellow IMI instructor) Angelo Presicci introduced her to Information Mapping. "I was looking for a new challenge and Angelo always spoke well of his experience with IMI. I am a teacher and a writer, so the work appealed to me on both levels. I liked the idea of traveling around the country and getting a feel for the issues facing people in different regions." Joyce entered the IMI Instructor Certification program in 1991 and by September of that year was teaching her first workshop. In this new role, she was able to find some of the same qualities that drove her commitment to public education. "The work is always stimulating and each new assignment brings a new challenge. Cathy Nairne (IMI's Manager of Learning Programs) has always given me new opportunities to grow by piloting new courses and other assignments that have kept the work fresh and challenging. There is never a dull day." Joyce now resides just north of San Francisco in San Rafael with Pete, her husband of over 25 years. In her free time, Joyce leads an active and varied lifestyle that would put many of us to shame. "The things I am most passionate about have to do with water, earth, words and politics." A lover of the outdoors, she can often be found making use of of the multitude of activities offered by surrounding Marin County. Some of these interests include swimming and SCUBA diving, biking, hiking and spending hours tending to her garden ("I am not happy if I am not growing things"). When colder weather drives her indoors, she can usually be found practicing yoga or curled up with a good book. "I love to read," she says, "I cannot live without it." Joyce plans on many more years of teaching IMI workshops to help people improve their content and documentation. "The IMI Method is so helpful and so adaptable to changing times that I see many applications for IMI workshops now and in the future."
