Employee Profile: Cathy Nairne

By Cynthia Whitty, Public Relations Specialist

After teaching at the secondary and post secondary levels in Atlanta and working in training and marketing support and sales for Burroughs/Unisys Corporation, Cathy Nairne started at Information Mapping, Inc. (IMI) in August 1992 as a contract instructor. In that role, she taught the Information Mapping® method throughout the United States and the world. In 1995, she became the manager of IMI’s instructor staff, a position that has expanded to include the design and development of IMI’s workshops, the development of e-learning workshops and Webinars, and speaking at conferences and professional gatherings nationwide.

The Product and the People
What has kept her at Information Mapping for over 15 years, she says, is the product and the people. “It’s been fascinating to watch the Information Mapping method evolve from a paper-based application to an essential part of any well-designed documentation application no matter what the technology,” says Cathy. “I’ve been fortunate to be in on new development and management decisions concerning the method for all these years.”

“I like knowing that we at Information Mapping have a product that is truly needed and that can make a real difference in the work lives of individuals and the well-being of their organizations.”

Developing New Webinars and e-Workshops
“Recently, I’ve been developing Webinars and e-workshops on a variety of topics, from writing procedures to constructing e-mails that get action. I’ve also been deeply involved in IMI’s foray into the DITA market. This has been particularly challenging as DITA, an XML-based architecture for authoring, developing, and delivering technical information, is in its infancy. IMI offers both software and training to support DITA implementation, and it’s been a lot of fun getting into this at the ground level.”

“The people here are just great … we work well together and have a lot of fun. I really enjoy the instructor staff. Nowhere could you find a more dedicated, professional, and interesting group! They’re not just colleagues … they’re friends. They are just the best!”

Cathy was born and raised in Paris, Illinois, a small town in east central part of the state, and has lived in Florida, Atlanta, and Chicago. She and her husband, Mike, have been living in Boston for 16 years. “We live in the South End in a bow-front row house in the middle of the largest district of Victorian row homes in the U.S. We love living in the heart of the city.”

Cathy has two stepdaughters and four grandchildren. They also have a dog, 10-year-old Tucker, a chocolate lab, and a cat, 17-year-old Robert, “that run our lives.”
