Grants Available to Fund Employee Training

By Lauren DeIeso, Marketing Coordinator

As the nation continues to compete in an ever-expanding global economy, it is critical that corporate America consists of educated and highly skilled individuals. The U.S. Department of Labor aims to achieve this through the Employment and Training Administration (ETA).

The ETA firmly states that its overall mission is to “contribute to the more efficient functioning of the U.S. labor market.” One of the ways in which the ETA accomplishes this is by providing high-quality job training through a number of providers. States across the nation have federal funds that are designed to provide applicants, or employers, with funds to train current and newly hired employees. For example, the Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund is a state fund financed entirely by Massachusetts employers. This fund aims to provide applicants with the resources to invest in the Massachusetts workforce and improve employee skills. According to the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, training grants for this particular state’s fund can range anywhere from $2,000 to $1 million.

Numerous employers across the U.S. are looking to improve the skill sets of their current employees. Unfortunately, the costs of doing so can be rather high. By taking advantage of the ETA and its funds, eligible employers can apply for grants in order to train employees. In addition to selecting from a number of pre-authorized training providers, employers, in many cases, may also choose a training provider of their own, given that certain criteria are met.

The ETA hosts a variety of programs and services that are available at both the state and local level. To find out about the various workforce investment funds that are available in your state, visit the U.S. Department of Labor.
